Abstract

Background: S. aureus is a commensal, opportunistic pathogen that capable of causing a wide variety of infections, ranging from mild skin lesions to lifethreatening conditions. The emergence of S. aureus acquiring resistance towards multiple antimicrobials has become a major public health concern seen in many countries. The present research was done to study the genotypic characterization of MDRSA isolated from livestock farmers in Peninsular Malaysia. Methodology: 28 out of 140 S. aureus isolates obtained from livestock handlers were identified to be MDRSA. The antibiogram of all S. aureus isolates towards 19 different antibiotics were determined prior to the selection. The selected isolates were subjected to PCR to determine the presence of various genes that encoded for different antimicrobial resistances mechanisms and virulence factors. Spa and agr typing were carried out to determine the genotypes of the isolates. Results: The presence of several antimicrobial resistance genes were confirmed. Meanwhile, virulence genes that aid the colonization and biofilm formation of MDRSA were also detected. 17 different spa types were detected, with t189 being the predominant genotype and only agr type I and II were detected in this study. Conclusion: The findings demonstrated the presence of various antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes among the MDRSA isolated from livestock farmers in Peninsular Malaysia.
