Abstract

Malaysia is committed and confident in achieving the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda. The nation has demonstrated that it is possible to set and achieve the targets through sustained, systematic and dedicated efforts. This study purposes to analyse selected Municipalities’ CSR Management (CSRM) Projects from seven (7) United Nation – European Environment Agency (UN-UEA) framework (Energy, zero waste management, Urban design, Urban environment, Transportation and Water) implemented in Malaysia. A qualitative multiple case study was conducted in order to carry out the purpose. The empirical data was collected by doing 10 semi-structured interviews with practitioners of four (4) selected Melaka’s Municipalities (Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah – MBMB, Majlis Perbandaran Hang Tuah Jaya – MPHTJ, Majlis Perbandaran Alor Gajah – MPAG & Majlis Perbandaran Jasin - MPJ). More specifically, in the context of Corporate Communication implementation and management of CSR for improving society sustainable development in Melaka City. Common findings in all seven (7) CSRM Projects are, a global management team in all organizations, that the organizational goal is in line with the organizational standard and that all CSRM Projects encounter a local demand. Moreover, all seven (7) CSRM Projects were found to measure, track and evaluate their processes by using one or a couple evaluation methods. Lastly, it was clear that all responsibilities within Carroll’s pyramid of CSR were valued within the participating CSRM Projects and that CSR is believed to become increasingly more important in the future. The final conclusion of this research is that the importance of CSR will increase in the future for CSRM Projects and improving society sustainable development based on the current market situation. Furthermore, CSRM Projects tend to manage and implement CSR in sections based on a global framework. The amount of local adaptation differs between sections and CSRM Projects, however, if the Triple Bottom Line (People, Planet and Profit) 3P balance is bigger the sustainable development adaptation tends to be bigger.
