Abstract

This study aims to explore the effects of the Internet and multimedia on non excel-lent students, especially in learning reading skills. The study is based primarily on afieldwork to obtain the desired results. The research sample consisted of 61 studentsat the Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, who have passed the Arabic language exami-nation in the Malaysian Secondary School Certificate. This study used the sitewww.belajararab.com to conduct field study about learning reading skills throughthe web site. This site contains the reading texts with some additional multimediamaterials (pictures, sounds and video) and the hyperlinks which is based on Cogni-tive theory in learning through multimedia and Constructivist theory. After thecompletion of the fieldwork, a number of findings could be reported. The most im-portant result is that learning via the Internet while providing multimedia and hy-perlinks contributed toward better grasp of the syllabus among the students, espe-cially on non excellent student which the statistic show the significant differencesbetween the excellent and non excellent students in the degree of acquisition andlearning. Note that the correlation between the students linguistic competency andtheir extent of acquisition is realized and verified. These results confirm the findingsof some previous studies such as Mayer, which showed that students are able to ob-tain excellent achievement when learning via the internet and multimedia
