Abstract

Background: According to the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2015-2025, globalized online learning is one of the ten shifts in achieving excellence in higher education system. In the era of advanced information technology (IT) as well dealing with the new generation of IT users, teaching and learning activities should be facilitated by IT. For the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 sessions, family medicine posting has used e-learning (KeLIP) to facilitate the teaching and learning activities. Method: At the end of the posting, students from both sessions were asked regarding the usefulness of KeLIP in guiding the students through the course. The response was in the scale of 1 to 5, from ‘strongly disagree’ to ‘strongly agree’. The mean marks of the groups which used and did not use e-learning for assignment (previous session) were also calculated. Subjective feedback was also provided. Results: By December 2017, 89 students responded and response rate was 81% (72/89). The mean (SD) for the question on the usefulness of KeLIP was 4.4(0.76). Mean (SD) marks for reflective writing increased from 6.37 (0.72) to 6.94 (0.60), p=0.031 after the use of KeLIP. Submission of assignment through e-learning was preferred over manual submission as it is more cost effective. Students especially appreciate the online feedback from lecturers to improve their reflective learning experience. Conclusion: Students feedback showed that e-learning platform is useful to facilitate teaching and learning activities. Medical courses are encouraged to make full use of e-learning platform to assist students throughout their course.
