Abstract

The rapid growth of modern technologies in medical research has produced various methods and tools for pregnancy prevention. There are many factors that lead to the high usage of contraceptives. Nevertheless, consideration of the need to use contraceptives in family planning must be based on the Islamic law. The variety of contraceptive methods and tools does not necessarily assure benefits and suitability for women who intend to do family planning. This article is to highlights the indication of using contraceptives as a family planning in the Islamic perspectives. This research is qualitative study used document analysis method to analyse related data. Data were obtained from various sources including books on contemporary fiqh, fiqh turath and medical science as well as fatwas by the National Fatwa Council. Besides, data were collected using the semi-structured interview method. Interviews were conducted with obstetricians and gynaecologists as well as mufti. The results show that the ruling on family planning changes based on the extent of the needs of the mother and the family in family planning. Several aspects needs to be considered, such as the mother’s health status, the financial status of the family, and the needs of the existing children. Also, there are differences in the rulings on the use of contraceptive methods and tools.
