Abstract

Self-identity is a psychology topic that has received a lot of attention, research and study. This is due to self-identity association with the behavior and personality of the individual. Despite of monitoring many indicators of low self-identity levels in Arabic societies, scientific research field has a lack of self-identity studies in Arabic societies in general and among university students in particular in addition to the unclear self-identity relationship with students’ future orientation. Therefore, this study aims at exploring the level of self-identity and future orientation and its relationship with some variables among a sample of the preparatory year students in King Khalid University in Abha city in Saudi Arabia. The study applies the descriptive approach. Also, the researcher has reconstructed several measures like self-identity and future orientation measures. The tools of the research have been applied on a random sample of 300 students at an average age of 18 to 20 years for the Academic year 2019/2020. The results showed statistical differences in respondents’ views of self-identity scale level that are attributed to income level variable due to the increase of F value which is 23.475 and significance level (0.000 ≥ α). The study recommended the inclusion of concepts and strategies for developing self-identity and future orientation in the curricula of university students in addition to drawing their attention on the importance of forming a specific positive direction towards the future. This aim can be achieved through educational and awareness programs in the university which focus on external factors related to educational, domestic and social context experienced by students.
