Abstract
The main aim of this paper is to present a proposal that argued measuring quality of life using Maslow's Hierachy of Needs failed to completely fulfill the measurement requirements of quality of life. This is because Maslov's Hierarchy of Needs only assesses the needs and wants aspects of individuals. However, this paper offers Maqasid Syariah approach of measuring quality of life that includes other aspects, rather than only needs and wants, which are justice, spiritual and public interest. In addition, this paper put forward a measurement model of quality of life based on Islamic principle of syariah-the Maqasid Syariah approach and discusses the various stages of human needs; the necessities(dharuriyyat), the convenience (hajiyyat),and the refinement(tahsiniyyat). Moreover, the five pillars of Maqasid Syariah, namely religion, life, mind, lineage and property, based on the jurisprudence set in the Holy Quran and sunnah as the foundation to measure quality of life are also discussed. These aspects are to ensure beneficence and avoid destruction of humankind. This paper proved that the Maqasid Syariah is an important framework to be applied in everyday life , especially in facing life challenges.
