Abstract

A variety of cognitive theories inspired the development of Language Learning Strategy (LLS). One of the most influential cognitive theories on Language Learning Strategy research is the information processing model. Therefore, this paper attempts to focus on the role of this model as a theoretical foundation for understanding and applying LLS. Under cognitive psychology framework, LLS have been defined and several main categories of strategies have been identified and introduced. This theory has helped researchers a lot in developing LLS construct and conducting researches on it. Thus, the cognitive theory can elaborate what language learning strategies are, how information is stored in memory, how strategies are learned, how some of them eventually become automatic and why strategies influence language learning in a positive manner. Apart from that, this paper has also succeeded in promoting the importance of collaboration between the fields of cognitive psychology and second language acquirement to accurately understand about LLS, the importance of its usage, and the effective method of teaching it.
