Abstract

This study aims to explore the effects of the Internet and multimedia on non excellent students, especially in learning reading skills. The study is based primarily on a fieldwork to obtain the desired results. The research sample consisted of 61 students at the Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, who have passed the Arabic language examination in the Malaysian Secondary School Certificate. This study used the site www.belajararab.com to conduct field study about learning reading skills through the web site. This site contains the reading texts with some additional multimedia materials (pictures, sounds and video) and the hyperlinks which is based on Cognitive theory in learning through multimedia and Constructivist theory. After the completion of the fieldwork, a number of findings could be reported. The most important result is that learning via the Internet while providing multimedia and hyperlinks contributed toward better grasp of the syllabus among the students, especially on non excellent student which the statistic show the significant differences between the excellent and non excellent students in the degree of acquisition and learning. Note that the correlation between the students linguistic competency and their extent of acquisition is realized and verified. These results confirm the findings of some previous studies such as Mayer, which showed that students are able to obtain excellent achievement when learning via the internet and multimedia.
