Abstract

We have exploited the Onion root tip meristem model to evaluate the Chemo deterrent activities of Black nightshade. The studies were extended to human cells using MCF-7 cell lines. Methods: Preliminary anticancer screening was done using Onion root tip assay. The herbal powder obtained from plant part-dry leaves were extracted with various solvents. The antimitotic activity was analyzed using Onion root meristematic cells. Trials were carried out with combination of folic acid in the extract. Results: Folic acid repressed the antimitotic activity of European Black nightshade extract. The results obtained were equated with methotrexate-a known anticancer drug. Extracts of European Black nightshade was found to be exceptionally effective in the preclusion of cell proliferation of the mammary gland breast adenocarcinoma cell lines. Discussion: The prominent anticancer activities of European Black nightshade were due to its prospective reactive oxygen species scavenging stuff principally by the significant role of phytochemicals such as polyphenols, steroidal saponin glycoside, alkaloids and flavonoids. Active principle sterol has been separated by TLC. Conclusion: The present study hypothesizes that European Black nightshade have the capacity to modify the physiological function of cells and hence act as anti-cancer remedies to seizure the proliferation of malignant tumour cells. 0 2013 Japan International Cultural Exchange Foundation & Japan Health Sciences University.
