Abstract

Clinical attachment is compulsory for final year diploma student in medical laboratory technology. Students from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) are allowed to complete their one year clinical attachment at one of the government or teaching hospitals either Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia Kelantan (HUSM), Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz Kuala Lumpur (HCTM), Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah Terengganu (HSNZ) or Hospital Tuanku Fauziah Perlis (HTF). Currently, cytology laboratory at HSNZ has altered the standard operation procedure for the preparation of non-gynaecological sample. The use of Hanks’ balance salt solution (HBSS) as a hemorrhagic fluid remover has been omitted during preparation of nongynaecological sample thus resulting indistinguishable mesothelial cells on cytological smear. Students have less confident for handling the cytological smear, feeling demotivated and incorrect diagnosis. Therefore, we used a normal saline rehydration technique (CytoRapid) to treat haemorrhagic fluid of cytological smear an alternative to HBSS. As a result, haemorrhagic fluid was successfully removed by CytoRapid and cytomorphological features of mesothelial cells were retained. The cytological smear from non-gynaecological sample is easily diagnosed. CytoRapid is a suitable procedure for haemorrhagic fluid from nongynaecological sample.
